OpenAI will sunset its GPT-4o model next month, alongside GPT-4.1 and other legacy versions, marking a strategic pivot toward newer iterations like GPT-5.2. The decision reflects dwindling usage—just 0.1% of daily users still engage with GPT-4o—as the majority migrate to more advanced defaults.
Launched in May 2024, GPT-4o initially carved a niche with its human-like conversational tone, appealing to creatives and brainstormers. Yet evolving user behavior has rendered it obsolete. 'Supporting outdated models distracts from innovation,' OpenAI stated, underscoring its focus on mainstream demand.
